Why have a personalized outdoor sign?

One thing that’s great for personalizing that you may not have thought about is outdoor yard signs. Having custom signs for outdoor signage means that people can get a feel for the type of person who resides there. It’s a great way to show off your character and individuality, either as a person or a business. The addition of a personalized outdoor sign also adds a nice touch to the outside of your premises and immediately makes it more welcoming.

Different outdoor sign types

The great thing about personalized outdoor signs is exactly that—you can have it to your taste just how you want it. Personalized outdoor signs come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors, and designs. They can be very effective in a number of settings including at:

  • homes
  • churches
  • work
  • college
  • doctors
  • schools
  • and so on!

Things to consider when choosing your own outdoor sign

Whether you’re going with a pre-designed outdoor sign that you intend to personalize or you’re starting from a blank canvas, these are some of the things you’ll want to think about:

Material:  Street signs and other outdoor signs are made of many different materials such as aluminum signs and other metal signs, wooden signs, and vinyl banners to name but a few. Many outdoor signs, however, are used from a material called coroplast. This is basically a corrugated plastic sheet that’s both durable and lightweight, making it perfect for this use. Other materials that outdoor signs are made of include wood and aluminum.

One or two-sided: Whether this is even an option or not will very much depend on where you’re planning on putting your sign. While a two-sided sign looks great, if it’s going to have one side of it facing a wall there’s really not much point in spending the extra money.

Color(s): If you already know what design or lettering you want on your outdoor sign, then it’s really just the background color you need to choose. While you can probably get a sign made in pretty much any color you like, try to avoid those that make the text hard to read. Some of the best contrasting colors are: black on white (and vice versa), yellow on black (and vice versa), and blue on white.

Thickness: Depending on the material you use, you may not have much control over this. However, if you are coroplast you will normally have a range of thicknesses to choose from. Obviously, the thicker the sign the more durable it will be.

Information: Another important factor to consider is what you want to have written on the sign. If it’s for your home, you may want to have the family name, picture, or address written on the sign.  For businesses or organizations, it will, of course, be the company name, but you may also want to include a company logo and slogan too.

How to avoid getting a sign you’re unhappy with

Planning is an essential part of getting a personalized outdoor sign made. To ensure you get a sign that you’re happy taking the time to plan out exactly what it is you want. This will save you a great deal of time and money in the end. Here are a few planning tips to help you when choosing a sign that’s right for you:

  • Location: The first and most important thing to do when getting ready to make your personalized outdoor sign is to figure out where you’re going to put it. Choose a location that’s not obstructed from too many trees or other structures. There’s no point going through the whole process of designing and ordering a sign only to find that you don’t have anywhere suitable to put it. Some signs will come with the accessories needed to mount it, whereas others you will need to buy something yourself to display your sign with. So, make sure you check this also.
  • Measure: Once you’ve found the perfect location, take some measurements to see how much space you actually have. Knowing the amount of free space you have in advance will help you decide what size sign to go for. Choosing a sign that’s too small will make it hard to see while choosing a sign that’s too big will just look silly. Measure the free space you have and choose your sign size from there. Don’t try and do this the other way around as you may end up getting a little frustrated if nothing seems to fit quite right.
  • Take pictures: To help you even further in making the right decision when it comes to buying your own personalized outdoor sign, take some pictures of the space where your sign will go. Then upload them to a program such as Paint and have a few attempts at creating your sign just how you want it to give you a clearer picture as to what it is you want. Sometimes, the really good ideas we have in our heads look completely different when we carry them out. This is a great way to stop one of those potential disasters from happening.

Hopefully, by now, you will have some idea as to what kind of personalized outdoor sign you’d like to see in your backyard. The most important thing to remember is to plan it out. If you’re a good artist do it freehand, or if you’re tech-savvy, use a computer. Either way, effective planning will ensure that you’re happy with your chosen design and will be more than happy to show it off.
