Stainless steel is a very popular letter type for houses and address numbers. All stainless steel letters and logos are shipped with a clear polyurethane coating. Alloy C304 will not tarnish under most conditions. In cases where stainless steel letters and logos will be installed in salt water environments Alloy 316 offers even better corrosion and tarnishing resistance. Alloy C304 is the standard “18/8” stainless; it is the most versatile and most widely used stainless steel. For areas within 50 miles of the coast, Gemini recommends Alloy 316. This conforms to recommendations by numerous metal industry panels. Use of 304 in coastal areas may experience premature failure.

Alloy 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to C304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than C304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Cor-Ten®– a weather resistant steel created by alloying copper, chromium and nickel. The material forms its own protective layer when exposed to atmospheric elements. Essentially, the top layer corrodes which then protects the steel beneath it. The natural finish does not normally require any form of maintenance such as painting, which makes the material a highly cost effective alternative to other structural steels.

FINISH NOTES: Brushed Steel letters are particularly susceptible to collecting exterior contaminants and airborne pollutants from harsh environments. This is because the brushed stainless steel finish catches and holds residues that can stain the surface of the letters. In many cases, we have seen customers believe that these residues are actually rust. In most non-marine cases, the brushed stainless steel finish simply needs to be cleaned. In cases where actual oxidation (rust) has occurred—it is  because the stainless has been exposed to marine environments or harsh atmospheres such as being near treated chlorine pools or concentrated engine exhaust. In these cases Alloy 316 is recommended for longer life. Remember—stainless steel is “stain less” not “stain free”. Like any product you need to maintain the stainless steel letters if they are outside in harsh environments.
