- Clean the surface.
An often overlooked step, cleaning the intended surface will make the whole process go a lot smoother and lead to a better finished project. A wet rag can often do the trick, but if you need to use a cleanser make sure it wont damage the surface’s finish.
- Align the vinyl letters.
Place the letters onto your cleaned surface and using a level, check to make sure it’s aligned and straight. Then apply tape to the top edge of your vinyl cut-out. This will be help you to see how it lines up at a distance as well as help keep them in place during instillation.
- Wet the wall with soapy water.
Lift the vinyl letters using the tape as a pivot point and lightly spray the surface with soapy water. This allows the vinyl letters to have some “play” when installing.
- Peel off the backing.
While the vinyl letters are still lifted off the surface, starting at the corner gently peel away the backing on the vinyl letters. It’s important to take your time at this stage because errors can be costly.
- Attach the letters to the wall.
Using the tape as a pivot point again, slowly lower the vinyl letters and adhere to the wall. Use a squeegee or straight edge to flatten out the vinyl letters, pushing any bubbles or excess water out. Let dry for 5 minutes.
- Peel away facing.
The final step is to gently pull the face paper away from the wall. Your letters at this point should be firmly attached to the wall. If they stick to the facing, wet the surface and squeegee the sign again (letting it dry for longer this time).
Hopefully you find these steps helpful. Your new letters should be prove to be a fun and durable addition to your home.
